Sony Computer Entertainment’s stylish, spy-themed sidescroller hits iPad and iPhone.

Set during an alternate history Cold War, CounterSpy is an espionage-themed action game in which players take on the role of a C.O.U.N.T.E.R special agent tasked with thwarting the efforts of a tyrannical superpower trying to launch nuclear warheads.

The game features striking, stylized art direction and visuals inspired by the general aesthetic of the 1950’s and 1960’s.

While CounterSpy was originally designed for Sony’s gaming platforms—PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita—it has now launched on the App Store for iOS-based devices. The response to the new mobile edition of CounterSpy has been mostly positive. Here’s a look at what critics are saying about the game.

148 Apps: CounterSpy is simply the best stealth-action game on the App Store. Its freedom of playing style is refreshing, and allows players to choose between going in guns blazing or taking out enemies swiftly and silently. This is a mission that everyone should choose to accept. (read the full review)

Pocket Gamer: Although the core gameplay experience remains the same throughout CounterSpy, crucially, it’s a lot of fun. And since each stage is procedurally-generated, the game offers literally endless replayability for those who fall for its charms. (read the full review)

Conversely, some reviewers weren’t particularly blown away by CounterSpy citing issues like a lack of variety in the game’s missions and problematic controls. Hopefully, MFi support will be released for the game in a forthcoming update.

TouchArcade: The iOS version feels like a beta test and I really hope we see some updates soon, because the game could be really good with some control adjustments. Even once I was fully acclimated to the abnormal control scheme, it was just too loose and wonky to really say it is 100% functional in it’s current state. (read the full review)
